The Start Of Something New

A new year has arrived. Each year comes like a new chance — a new beginning –a new start on life.

Enhanced Rainbow

Each year, it seems as though I like to stay with the same ol’ same ol’ and am cool with not changing it — the same breakfast in the morning-every morning, the same schedule, the same same SAME!  The same is good sometimes. Other times, you just need something different.

To lead a balanced life, I am realizing, I need to not be afraid to try something new. I want to open myself up and try new things. If I never try on that new style of jeans I see at the mall, how will I know how much I lost by not trying.  I don’t want to miss out on the possibilities of life. Life is too short not to be enjoyed. Try that new fruit/vegetable a fellow blogger has discovered and loves. Try that new nail polish color. Try a new color on your wall. Try that new game everyone’s been talking about. Try that hobby your cousin adores, that sport your dad obsesses over, that musical instrument your sister devotes herself to. Give that book your mother has bugged you about reading by next week a try (love you momma dearest!). Try that new recipe you’ve been eyeing recently!!! 🙂 — who knows, it may become you favorite.

These are some of the things I have tried recently and have fallen in love with:

I just tried Prickly Pear Fruit (those deep red ones — seeds and all — SO good!) I was hesitant at first, but it was love at first bite. 😉

Rummykub /Bananagrams — these are now my absolute favorite games on the planet!!!

Pride and Prejudice — My mother had to literally force me to read it. I didn’t want to, but when I did — OH MY GOSH! I FELL IN LOVE (fyi, Darcy is MINE!!!! muhaha! lol).

For the very first time in my life, I ate Sushi (made with brown rice — added bonus) — YUMMERS! 🙂

I tried my first Grain Free Bitter Chocolate Cake (Spoonful of Sugar Free) — a favorite now!

I tried my first Pizzert (Chocolate Covered Katie) — Chocolate style!!!

I am now happily converted to Pizzerts!!! 🙂

Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic.” Dave Barry

I need to have the courage to step out of my comfort zone and try some new things. A new year has arrived. It is a new chance. It is a new beginning. It is the start of something new.

  1. I don’t recall if I’ve posted on your blog before, but I really enjoyed this post! Save the fact that it reminded me of high school musical because of the whoel “start of somethign new” bit. which is embarrassing and probably something I should have kept to myself…

Keep it up! I’m looking for some novelty in my life too 🙂 And spontaneity. That’s my key word for the year 😉

  2. I’ve always wondered what those prickly pears taste like….Do you eat the whole thing or just the insides?? Is there a seed??

YAYYYYY!!! So glad you love my bitter chocolate cake recipe! Makes me so happy 😀

  3. Hi Kath thank you for your message :). I’m not sure if you read my reply but I also found your blog, through cleanteenkelsey not too long ago and like it a lot! I was intrigued by your background story- how is your moms diabetes now?

I am not much of a commenter (but trying to change ;)) which is why you hadnt seen me around yet ;).

Like I said to Katie: I have GOT to try the pizzert.

    1. My mom has actually turned her life around. She was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (where the pancreas makes insulin, but the body doesn’t know how to use it properly), and has since changed her lifestlye for the better; once she was diagnosed, she learned everything she could about being a diabetic; she has lost the excess weight (about 60-70 lbs), she controls it with diet, exercise, and strength training – her doctor has taken her off medication because she controls it so well. She feels so much better now, and it rubs off on the rest of us. Since diabetes is prominent in my family (my grandma, my mom, my uncle, etc) I have to be careful. My mom is my role model. I am so grateful for her. She motivates me to be healthier and enjoy life in the moment.

  4. I LOVE this! I’m so ready to step out of my usual shoes this year and really just live and challenge myself – especially spiritually.

  5. Kathleen, thanks for your comment on my post; glad it was helpful! It’s nice to meet you and I’m excited about all the new things you’ve tried. Sushi-love it. P&P book-amazing. Now I need to try that prickly pear..neat!

  6. “The start of something new…” reminds me of High School Musical (don’t judge) 🙂 I have been lovinggggg how much more I’m inspired to try new things since I started my blog…in all areas of my life. And now my fam loves trying new things too. My mom said I inspired her to buy new veggies at the store she’s never had before: score!

  7. LOVE that you’re setting a goal to try new things! Such a great way to live. It will make you a little more cultured, and it always makes thing more interesting! I never head the prickly pear fruit, you are making me want to though 🙂

    Have a wonderful weekend, Kat!

  8. I love trying new foods, and am glad you’re enjoying it too! Hope this year is one of spontaneity in every part of your life 🙂

  9. I LOVE trying new things! I used to be rather boring…always having the same breakfast, always ordering the same dish at a restaurant. Now, I love the “surprise” of something new and different!

I’ve never tried a prickly pear before. Are they tart tasting (for some reason I think they would be). Congrats on trying sushi! My first time with sushi was not a good one, but I’m so glad that I gave it another chance. I love it!

Your chocolate pizzert looks ahhhhhhhmazing! I want it like right now!!

    1. I didn’t find them tart at all. I’ve only tried the red ones, (so I can’t speak for the other kinds/colors), but I found they had kind of a slight sweetness to them. I fell in love with it first bite. 🙂

  10. Stepping out of my comfort zone is something I force myself to do on a weekly basis, it’s so easy to drift along in a routine unless you snap out it! Doing so has gained me new friendships, new experiences, and new favorite foods. I think it’s awesome you are doing this.

P.S. Oh em gee, I must have a pizzert right now..

  11. You’re so right! We need to try new things and get out of our comfort zone! My new year resolution too! 😀

  12. That Sushi looked yummy. I love Sushi…let me know when you want to go out and get some! My hubby knows how to make sushi…did you make yours or buy yours?

    1. My dad actually bought the sushi. They were giving samples of it at Costco, and he bought it (that day, he also bought a lot of other things because they were giving samples of them). Lesson learned — when sending a guy to the store alone, expect things-not-on-the-list to be bought. 😉

We should totally go get some!!! That sounds like a lot of fun!!! 🙂

  13. mm! that pizzert looks SO chocolatey!
I love sushi but rarely eat it.. its actually hard to find a good clean sushi made from minimal questionable ingredients! When I find a good one though, boy is it good 😀
